Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup whole milk
  • 1/4 cup sour cream
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter (softened)
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 egg whites
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter (room temperature)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (for frosting)
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 3 tablespoons whole milk (for frosting)
  • 1 drop red gel food coloring

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 325°F (163°C). Line a 12-cup muffin tin with cupcake liners.
  2. Whisk together the cake flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt in a medium bowl.
  3. Combine the whole milk, sour cream, and vanilla extract in a separate bowl.
  4. Cream the softened butter and granulated sugar together on medium speed until light and fluffy.
  5. Add the egg whites and mix until fully incorporated.
  6. Alternate adding the dry and wet ingredients to the butter mixture, mixing until smooth.
  7. Scoop the batter into the cupcake liners, filling them about 3/4 full.
  8. Bake for 20-22 minutes, or until the tops spring back when touched lightly.
  9. Allow them to cool on a wire rack.
  10. Combine the room temperature butter and powdered sugar in a bowl for the frosting, then mix in the whole milk and vanilla extract until smooth.
  11. Add a drop of red gel food coloring and mix until you reach the desired color.
  12. Frost the cooled cupcakes using a piping bag to create lovely swirls.
